Green Travel

Travel can involve the consumption of massive amounts of energy and water and production of large quantities of waste, spoiling ourselves with excessive amenities, exploitation of local residents, imposing upon local culture and traditions, and degradation of the environment.

We think that sucks

What we seek is authentic, distinctive, and greener ways to travel because travel can enlighten us, expose us to new cultures, allow us to experience and preserve spectacular landscapes, teach us about this amazing planet we live in while fostering a conservation ethic and positively benefiting the host community.

We focus on the principles of sustainable tourism – how travelers, businesses, communities, and local residents can understand, implement, support, and accurately promote them.

Sustainable Destinations

TGA is a Geotourism Ambassador and supports and promotes National Geographic’s Geotourism Principles as guidelines for destination stewardship.

Geotourism is defined by National Geographic as “Tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents”.

The 13 principles of Geotourism are:

  • Integrity of Place
  • International Codes
  • Market Selectivity
  • Market Diversity
  • Tourist Satisfaction
  • Community Involvement
  • Community Benefit
  • Protection and Enhancement of Destination Appeal
  • Land Use
  • Conservation of Resources
  • Planning
  • Interactive Interpretation
  • Evaluation

Authentic Travel

We seek out authentic destinations and authentic tourism providers. Geotourism assets reflect and further develop the character of the place.  Most places have stories to tell, many of them unrealized and underappreciated. Geotourism thrives on such distinctiveness: What makes a town, region, or country unique?

When tourists visit, they need to have an interesting, enjoyable time exploring and learning about what the natural, cultural, and historic resources that make that area unique.

Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them. *  TGA has assembled some guidelines for responsible tourists.

We try as often as possible to demonstrate responsible travel and highlight responsible travel experiences in Appalachia.  Please visit our Blog and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get updates on our travels and share yours.
