“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
Mahatma Ghandi

Doug Arbogast started his journey 14 years ago when he answered a newpaper ad to be a raft guide on the Cheat River in northcentral West Virginia.  He developed a love for the rivers, mountains, and people of Appalachia.  He spent a decade as a raft guide on the Cheat, Youghiogheny, and Gauley rivers.  In the off season he traveled to explore Appalachia and the natural and cultural resources of the United States.

He reaffirmed his commitment to sustainable travel and tourism by completing a bachelor of arts degree in Environmental geo-Science and a masters of science degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Resources at West Virginia University.  During and after grad school he had the opportunity to study best practice examples of sustainability around the world always returning to consider how to best apply these principles in Appalachia.  Working with rafting companies to green their operations, local communities to preserve their land and culture, and natural area managers to preserve open space and manage visitor impact taught him the challenges of balancing nature, local culture, and commerce.

Susan Arbogast provides administrative support and generally advises on the right way to do things.
